Tonne Sf std. (9. Jh. ), mhd. tunne, tonne, ahd. tunna, mndd. tunne, mndl. tunne, tonne Entlehnung. Wie ae. tunne, afr. tonne entlehnt aus ml. tunna, frz. tonne, das auf ein keltisches Wort zurückgeht (vgl. mir. tonn f. "Haut" > "Schlauch" > "großes Gefäß"). Schon früh als Maßeinheit verwendet. Ebenso nndl. ton, ne. tun, ton, nfrz. tonneau, tonne, nschw. tunna, ton, tonn, nisl. tunna, tonn; "Tunnel".
