(att.) biōtikós "lebensfähig, zum Leben gehörig" und "anti-", weiter zu gr. bíos m. "Leben". So benannt als "ein lebende Erreger abtötendes Mittel". Ebenso nndl. antibioticum, ne. antibiotic, nfrz. antibiotique, nschw. antibiotikum, nnorw. antibiotikum. Zur Sippe von gr. bíos "Leben" s. "Biologie".
